Like all critical components on your vehicle, owning a hitch requires that you monitor and maintain it, to ensure your safety and that of everyone else on the road. If you notice any of the following issues with your hitch, be sure to bring it in for an inspection.
KEY INDICATORS YOUR HITCH MAY BE IN TROUBLE
RUST. When it comes to any metal components, rust is a bad sign. If you see even a small bit of it, you will want to inspect the entire unit to be sure it’s not just the tip of the ice burg. The hitch pin, ball mount, safety chains, and receiver hitch should all be separated and double-checked. A small bit of rust may be covering over a more significant problem. Or if the occurrence is small enough and the overall structure is uncompromised, it may be possible to treat the problem. Of course, if the rust is severe but contained to a single component, you may also be able to replace just that specific segment.
CRACKS. At the first sign of a crack, you need to replace the hitch. If it’s on one component of the apparatus, be sure to have the other parts inspected, so you know they are still structurally sound. It’s also an excellent reason to clean your hitch set-up often. Dirt and debris can mask cracks and prevent you from taking action before it’s too late.
GENERAL DAMAGE. Don’t take chances with hitch damage. If any part of the apparatus looks degraded or worn, be sure to schedule an appointment to have it inspected.
WEIGHT RATING. If you buy a new trailer or you are taking on something particularly substantial in your current one, be sure you double-check the weight rating of your hitch set-up. Don’t get caught with a hitch that won’t support the load, especially when an upgrade is generally easy to do.
